"Real Betis Balompié" was founded on September 12, 1907. In 1914, King Alfonso XIII awarded the club the honorary title of "Real". The name "Real Betis" is one of the few in Spanish football that consists only of words of Spanish origin, and the oldest of all. The term "Balompié" literally means football, although most teams in the country choose the term "fútbol" as a copy from the English language.
Their greatest honors are the League Championship won in the 1934/35 season and two Copa del Rey wins, in 1977 and 2005. They were the first Andalusian team to play in Spain's first division and then became the first to play in the Champions League in its current format. In addition, Betis is a two-time finalist in the Spanish Cup and once in the Spanish Super Cup.
"Betis" is the only team that participated and became the winner in the first three Spanish leagues (La Liga, Segundi and Tercera). Betis' home stadium is the club-owned Estadio Benito Villamarin, while all Academy teams play at the Luis del Sol Training Center, located just 200 meters from the main stadium. The white-green stadium can accommodate up to 60 fans. It is located in the Heliopolis area, near Paseo de la Palmera, one of the main arteries of the city of Seville. Membership has grown significantly in recent years and now stands at over 271. The club has its own Academy which has produced first team players throughout its history. Currently, the Academy has 50 teams.
Club colors
The club's colors also have their roots deep in history. Initially, neither Sevilla Balompie nor Betis Football Club had any specific colors. The teams played in simple football uniforms, which had black and white colors, purple color was rarely used. In 1912, Manuel Ramos Asensio, one of the club's founders, returned from Glasgow with a set of green and black striped shirts donated by local club Celtic and suggested that Betis adopt the colours. Such a color was later considered unlucky, since in the form of the Celts the team lost several matches in a row and later it was decided to take the colors of the flag of Andalusia, adopted in 1918.
The green flag that appeared in Andalusia in the 18th century was the standard of the Umayyad Dynasty, on which the white color crosses the green color, symbolizing the union of two peoples: the Umayyads and the Almodahs. On July 1195, XNUMX, Almohad Sultan Yakub al-Mansur (Yusuf II) defeated Alfonso VIII of Castile in the Battle of Alarcos. As a reminder of this victory, a white and green flag was ordered to be hung on the building of the Seville Mosque. Thus, the white and green colors became a symbol of Andalusia, which later influenced the formation of the color scheme of the current "Betis".
